“How many vents should I order?” is a useful question. Answering it starts with the enclosed area and the specific vent model you intend to install.
Buying by appearance alone can lead to the wrong quantity.
Understand the sizing method
Non-engineered flood openings use a prescribed net-open-area approach. Engineered openings use documented performance and coverage information. For engineered products, consult the applicable certification or evaluation report instead of treating the vent’s outside dimensions as its coverage rating. FEMA’s flood opening guidance
Compare the actual models
Flood Solutions’ product listings identify both the required wall opening and the square footage covered by each model. Those are different measurements with different purposes: one helps determine physical fit, while the other informs the coverage calculation. Compare models and coverage
For illustration, suppose an engineered vent is rated for 100 square feet and an enclosure measures 650 square feet. The coverage calculation would produce 6.5, rounded up to seven vents.
That example is only the starting calculation. The final layout must also satisfy the applicable placement and minimum-opening requirements.
Count spaces carefully
Interior divisions can affect the layout. Give your contractor or designer a sketch showing separate enclosed areas, dimensions, exterior walls, and proposed vent locations.
Flood Solutions’ installation guidance calls for at least two vents per enclosed area, located on at least two different exterior sides. Simply meeting a total coverage number does not settle every installation question. Review installation requirements
Before ordering, compare your enclosure measurements with the selected model’s documentation and have the proposed layout reviewed.
