Five Flood Vent Installation Mistakes to Avoid

A flood vent purchase is only part of the project. The installation determines whether the selected product can perform as intended.

Here are five mistakes worth addressing before work begins.

1. Checking the trim size instead of the wall opening

The outside dimensions of a vent are not necessarily the dimensions of the opening it needs. Compare both measurements before preparing the wall. Flood Solutions lists them separately for its products. View product dimensions

2. Choosing locations before checking requirements

Convenient locations may not be suitable locations. Review opening height, distribution, and the needs of each enclosed area before finalizing the layout. See installation requirements

3. Adding a solid seasonal cover

A cover that must be removed by hand can prevent the automatic passage of floodwater. Check any proposed cover or accessory against the product documentation before adding it. Read our flood vent FAQs

4. Leaving landscaping out of the plan

Look beyond the wall itself. Ask whether planned mulch beds, paving, or other changes will affect the opening’s clearance or its relationship to adjacent grade.

Make this part of the project review rather than an afterthought.

5. Misplacing the paperwork

Create one folder for the model information, evaluation report, installation instructions, and finished-installation photographs. That gives you a useful record for future questions.

Before the job is considered complete, walk through the installation with your contractor. Compare the finished work with the approved plan and manufacturer’s instructions.
